Horumon × Osaka: 5 Truly Delicious Yakiniku Spots Loved by Locals

April 01, 2024

When most people think of Japanese cuisine, sushi and ramen usually top the list. But if you're ready to take a deeper dive into authentic, local Japanese food culture, there's one hidden gem you shouldn't miss—horumon. This uniquely Japanese style of barbecue focuses on offal, or organ meats, and Osaka is the very heart of this bold and flavorful tradition. For many locals, horumon isn’t just food—it’s soul.

As a local Osakan, I’ve explored countless yakiniku joints across the city. In this article, I’ll introduce you to five of my personal favorite horumon spots—places I’ve visited myself and would wholeheartedly recommend. Ready to taste the real Osaka?

The Connection Between Horumon and Osaka

The word horumon actually comes from the Kansai dialect phrase hōrumon, which means “things to throw away.” Back in the day, organ meats were considered leftovers, but in true Osakan spirit, locals turned what was once discarded into delicious, satisfying dishes through ingenuity and passion.

Osaka is a city with a deep-rooted love for yakiniku. Cheap, flavorful, and full of personality, horumon has become a staple at local izakayas and BBQ joints. Whether you’re sipping a cold beer with a side of grilled tripe or digging into some rich pork intestine stew, horumon captures the everyday charm of Osaka life—and leaves a lasting impression on travelers seeking something real.

Just a 7-minute walk from JR Fukushima Station, Oni ni Kanabō Fukushima radiates lively energy even from the outside. This beloved local spot puts horumon center stage, offering a well-curated menu that highlights the best of offal BBQ. The interior has a warm, wooden aesthetic, with spaces for couples, families, and even kids—welcoming everyone from solo diners to groups.

The star here is their incredibly fresh, odor-free horumon. One standout is their Salted Horumon, served with nine different condiments that let you customize each bite. From citrusy ponzu to scallion-based sauces, these distinctively Japanese flavors are a delightful surprise for many international guests. Their thick-cut toro tongue and truffle-infused “jar dishes” show off a creative side that’s sure to impress.

The horumon here is never frozen. Instead, they use a unique supply chain to source only the freshest cuts. Grilled over charcoal, each bite bursts with savory umami. Try their signature “Genki Harami” (juicy skirt steak) or the melt-in-your-mouth Tontoro (pork cheek). And don’t skip the two-day simmered beef bone ramen—a perfect way to end your meal. With its energetic staff and buzzing vibe, it feels like being invited to a rowdy, joyful Japanese house party.

Located in Utagawa-cho, Umeda, Horumon Piporo opened its doors in 2022 and quickly gained attention for its unique solo yakiniku concept. The cozy, L-shaped counter setup creates a relaxed yet welcoming atmosphere, perfect for newcomers or seasoned horumon lovers alike.

What sets this place apart is its wide range of offal dishes. The signature “Piporo Yukhoe” combines four different cuts—omasum, heart, tongue, and honeycomb tripe—served raw and mixed with a rich egg yolk. For the adventurous, rare parts like glans or akakori (a crunchy, red offal cut) come dressed in house-made sauces that enhance their textures and flavors. It’s also open late, making it a perfect spot for a post-night-out bite in Umeda.
